Why I love coconut oil June 26, 2015 16:01

Coconut oil is a staple in our house, we use it for sooooooo many things. When buying coconut oil I look for virgin, unrefined, organic, or cold pressed on the label. I always check the ingredients section of the label to make sure it is 100% pure coconut oil. The oil will be solid in the jar. Don't worry if it melts and solidifies as the temperature changes in your home. Coconut oil has a melting point of 76 degrees so it may change often, it won't affect the oil. We keep a jar in the kitchen and each bathroom.

The most obvious use of course is cooking. Coconut oil is delicious! We use it for cooking everyday. It has replaced most other oils in our kitchen. If you are not a fan of the taste of coconuts, don't be afraid to try it. You don't really taste it when used for chicken or fish that is made with seasonings, or anything else seasoned. I find it a great way to sear chicken without that heavy greasy taste. If you are a fan of the taste, use it when making white rice or stir fry vegetables, it has a light nutty flavor that is just wonderful!

I also use coconut oil in my morning coffee, I add 1 tbs. and use a coffee frother to mix it in. If you don't have a frother, put it in your blender or a magic bullet. It creates a frothy head on the coffee with a delicious hint of coconut. I was told that using it will reduce the "caffeine crash" that I have around 3pm. Some days (not all) I would say that is true. I just really love how it makes my coffee taste!

Published studies state that the health benefits of consuming coconut oil include cholesterol level maintenance, weight loss, boosted immune system, proper digestion and regulated metabolism. These benefits of oil can be attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, these acids naturally have antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. Which is why we also use it on our skin.

I personally use coconut oil as a facial moisturizer. I love the antioxidant properties for premature aging (no one wants that). Coconut oil is a natural sunscreen as well, it is considered about SPF 10 so it provides nice everyday protection for my face without all of the toxins in commercial SPF moisturizers. I also use coconut oil for- oil pulling, (google it) making my all natural toothpaste, making my all natural deodorant, as all over moisturizer, as a conditioning treatment for my hair, shaving my legs, soothing sunburn, removing makeup, as an acne treatment/preventative, face scrubs, and of course, coconut oil is a very large part of my soap making. In fact one of my most popular soaps is 100% coconut oil. It makes a rich lather and is the only soap that will lather in salt water (who knew?) We use coconut oil soap on our faces, bodies and even our hair.

So go out and get yourself some coconut oil!
